Learning objectives and structure of the learning unit

Author of the course unit

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ralf Bill coordinates the project OpenGeoEdu. Professor Bill has been Professor of Geodesy and Geoinformatics at the University of Rostock since 1994. His textbook "Grundlagen der Geo-Informationssysteme", published in 2016 in its 6th edition, is considered the standard in GIS education in German-speaking countries.
For years, Prof. Bill has been working with open geodata and increasingly incorporates it into his teaching in order to generate individualized tasks for students and thus promote their creativity.

Learning objectives

The aim of the course unit is to get to know the essential terms and currents and to be able to classify them. After working on this lecture script on your own, you should master the essential basic ideas of openness in society, administration, business and science.

Lecture

The lecture consists of a collection of short definitions and references to important international organizations. It is intended as a quick overview, with details especially on open data you will deal with in the course unit "Open Data".

Exercises

In the exercise you will deal more intensively with Open Access, Open Data Repositories and Open Source Software. Here you should:

  • deal with the openness in scientific publishing by searching and comparing journals (open versus closed) in the GIS field,
  • search for open research data in common data repositories and
  • find offers of open GIS software to create your own open software alternative for the processing of our case studies.
