About Authors

Dr. Gotthard Meinel is the head of research area "Monitoring of Settlement and Open Space Development" at the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development. His research interests are focusing on automated information acquisition, analysis and visualization technologies for monitoring of land use development. He is leading the OpenGeoEdu-Team in Dresden for the conception, development and preparation of learning modules on land use monitoring as well as guiding research tasks.

Dr. Hendrik Herold is a research scientist within the research area "Monitoring of Settlement and Open Space Development" at the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development. His research interests are focused around Geoinformation Science, image analysis, remote sensing, land change monitoring. He supports the conception, coordination, and communication for OpenGeoEdu project and offers tutoring activities for the learning module Land Use Monitoring.

Dr. Sujit Sikder is a research associate for the OpenGeoEdu project within the research area "Monitoring of Settlement and Open Space Development" at the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development. His research interests are spatial analysis, geocomputation, multi-criteria analysis and open data within the scope of new urban science. He is intensively working for designing, preparation, implementation, tutoring for the learning module on land use monitoring and conducting thematic research activities.

Learning Goals

This lecture will introduce to the scientific background on the topic of land use monitoring. Upon completing this section, you should be prepared for working with given exercises on dealing with data and basic analytics for sustainable urban and regional development.

The lecture consists of 7 chapters. In the practical exercises and tasks questions on local, regional and national level are highlighted.
